Skill and Passion

Two of my primary responsibilities as a Thompson Burton co-founder and managing partner are to: Build a culture that makes success more likely; and Find and recruit the best possible talent I believe a great culture starts with the right values. Walt Burton and I identified seven core values when we started the firm back in 2012. In this post, I want to talk about two – Skill and Passion – because they are so important for success. In fact, they are inseparable from it. SKILL Skill is like the moat that protects the castle. Skill creates separation from a crowded field of legal professionals. We made a decision during the early days to focus on unique practice areas that require a high degree of experience and Skill. It’s easy to identify lawyers with tremendous amounts of Skill.  They tend to be more patient.  They also speak with great confidence and […]

Five Things to Know Before Signing a Prenup

By John J. Hollins Jr., Prenuptial agreements get a bad rap as they are sometimes referred to as “divorce agreements.” People see them as a prediction that a marriage will fail or as insurance in case it does. What prenups acknowledge is that one or both parties brings significant assets — or the potential of future inherited assets — to the marriage. Both parties have the right to protect those assets in case something unexpected happens. With wedding season in full swing, here are five important things to keep in mind with any prenup. 1) Never sign a prenup without your family lawyer reviewing it. It is important that you hire a family attorney who is familiar with all […]

Reflections on 2017 and Plans for 2018

2017 was a banner year for Thompson Burton. And 2018 holds great promise. As a founding partner, I’m proud of our team’s professional achievements, whether making the Best Lawyer’s list or providing quality client service. I’m equally proud of our team’s commitment to family and their pursuit of individual passions outside of work hours. Walt and I believe Thompson Burton’s focus on balance and other core values is a competitive advantage when recruiting and retaining the best lawyers and staff. I hope 2017 was great for you and that 2018 is even better. We asked our team to share what they remember most about 2017 and what they are looking forward to in 2018. Here are their thoughts. What will you remember most about 2017? “Spending a little time with two very special little great nieces; the memorable and incredibly fun wedding of my niece, Elizabeth; and getting NUMEROUS big […]

Thompson Burton Attorney Appointed To Board of Appeals by Gov. Haslam

Gov. Bill Haslam has appointed Thompson Burton attorney Jennifer Lankford to the Tennessee Board of Appeals, which hears complaints brought by preferred state employees appealing a demotion, suspension or termination. Lankford, who focuses on employment law, was the only attorney appointed to the Board of Appeals this year. “I am honored by Governor Haslam’s appointment and the opportunity to serve the state of Tennessee,” said Lankford. “The Board of Appeals plays an important role deciding disputes between state agencies and their employees. My expertise in employment law serves me well as a Board member.” The Board of Appeals is the third and final step in the administrative appeal procedure provided for preferred service employees. Preferred employees first appeal decisions to the appointing agency, then to the Tennessee Commissioner of Human Resources, before presenting their case to the Board. “Walt and I are proud of Jennifer’s appointment,” said co-founder Kevin Thompson.
