Biography

Michael Shoptaw focuses his practice on commercial real estate and finance, assisting clients in the acquisition, disposition, development, financing, and leasing of commercial real property. In connection with his commercial real estate work, Michael assists buyers, sellers, lenders, and tenants in all aspects of the respective parts of any transaction, including drafting and negotiating letters of intent, purchase and sale agreements, development agreements, loan agreements, lease agreements, and other definitive and ancillary real estate documents. Related to such matters, Michael routinely reviews and negotiates title commitments and proformas, surveys, third party diligence reports and lien searches, coordinating the termination or removal of encumbrances as appropriate.

Most recently, and prior to rejoining Thompson Burton, Michael served as Director, Real Estate Legal & Leasing for Dollar General Corporation, acting as nationwide internal real estate counsel across Dollar General’s 20,000+ store footprint. Prior to joining Dollar General, Michael worked at Thompson Burton as an Associate, having stops at the State of Tennessee’s Department of Treasury as Treasury Counsel and, before that, Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC as an Associate in the firm’s Real Estate and Finance practice group. At the Department of Treasury, Michael primarily acted as pension counsel for the State of Tennessee’s Consolidated Retirement System and responded to other program-generated requests for legal advice, interpretations, and guidance.  At Baker Donelson, Michael did much of the same work that he practices today in the area of commercial real estate.

Michael lives in East Nashville (Inglewood) with his wife, Christina, their son, Ellis, and their daughter, June. In their free time, Michael and Christina enjoy cooking and hosting friends in their home. When they can break away from their kids, or better yet find the mental strength to take their little ones with them, Michael and Christina enjoy exploring different parts of Nashville and the less traveled areas of Middle Tennessee. The Shoptaws are proud University of Tennessee football season ticket holders and are supporters of all things Volunteers.
